Wii Wheel - Can Wii Have More Fun??
Date of Review: Aug 27, 2008
The Bottom Line: Great Product!
The technology behind the Wii allows it to pick up movements of the Wiimote in any direction - horizontal, vertical, and rotations. Two great introductory games to what the Wiimote can do are
Wii Sports and
Wii Play. Fortunately, though, the Wii has the ability to do so much more than just point at the screen, as is showcased by
Mario Kart Wii. This is what brings me to the
Wii Wheel - it comes packaged with
Mario Kart Wii, and it is only natural that you pick up at least one more for additional people to enjoy. But why, you ask? Read on, young grasshopper, read on.
How It Works The Wii Wheel works by directly interacting with the Wiimote - you simple insert the Wiimote into the wheel (in the only direction that it will go - and make you that you're wrist strap makes it out the hole in the back!), and you are good to go. You do not have to plug anything into the back of the Wiimote, it really is just that simple.
Are There Any Additional Buttons? There is one button on the back of the Wii Wheel, but it just interacts with your B button that is on your Wiimote (the B Button is directly behind the big button). In fact, it's still called the B Button!
So Why Is It So Much Fun? The Wii Wheel is so much fun because it adds another level of interaction to your Wii experience. To turn left you are not just pushing a joystick anymore, you are actually turning a steering wheel left! To turn right, you just turn your Wii Wheel right! To perform a trick in
Mario Kart Wii, just shake vigorously (just like real life)!
What Does It Look Like, Though? The Wii Wheel actually looks like a steering wheel, it is a complete circle (not like some of the other wheels that only go 3/4 of the way around), and from the back has three spokes (for lack of a better description word). In the center of the back, it says "Wii" in a circle that is Wii-blue.
So It Looks Nice, But How Does It Feel? I have to say that I'm impressed by how the Wii Wheel feels - I'm not afraid of breaking it when I use it, and the thickness of the wheel is perfect. It gives the feel of actually holding a small steering wheel, while not feeling like I'm holding onto a Fischer Price toy.
How Heavy Is The Wii Wheel? So the Wii Wheel looks and feels great, but how much does it weigh? Since it's a free-standing wheel (meaning it's not on a stand that you can put on your coffee table), you have to hold it up the whole time. If it weight 10 pounds, your arms are going to be dead at the end of every game (but you will be jacked!). Fortunately, the bulk of the weight comes from the Wiimote, and its listed weight is 0.63lbs without the Wiimote. Think of it as nothing... your wallet probably weighs more than this thing...
Overall The Wii Wheel has a very solid feeling to it, while looking nice and weighing next to nothing. It adds a great element to
Mario Kart Wii, and picking up additional Wii Wheels is a must!
