Panasonic Lumix DMC-ZS3 / DMC-TZ7 Digital Camera

This is a nice camera which does a lot of what you expect. although not as good as a good quality SLR it does preform well. the quality of the images is excellent, the new video is superb although editing is very clumsy i would recommend pinnicle if you haven't already got it. the main point is buying a as large an SD card as possible as this is what limit's the capabilities. If you can afford the £400 for a cannon SLR or likewise then they will do the job but this is a very capable alternative. also keep your charger handy you will need it.
